Quick Tips
Know your limits
LinkedIn posts allow 3,000 characters, comments 1,250, headlines 220, and About sections 2,600. Exceeding these limits means your content gets cut off without warning.
Optimise the preview window
Only the first 125–200 characters of a post are visible before 'see more.' Make every character in this preview count — it determines whether anyone reads the rest.
Don't max out every time
Longer isn't always better. The best-performing LinkedIn posts are typically 1,200–1,500 characters. Use the full 3,000 only when your content genuinely requires it.
Account for hashtags and mentions
Hashtags, @mentions, and URLs all count toward your character limit. Factor these into your character budget when planning your post content.
Why this matters — LinkedIn has strict character limits that differ by content type. Exceeding the limit means your message gets truncated, often mid-sentence. Checking character count before publishing ensures your complete message is delivered and prevents embarrassing cut-offs.
Why Character Count Matters on LinkedIn
Prevent content truncation
LinkedIn silently truncates content that exceeds character limits. Without checking, you might lose your closing CTA, final point, or hashtags — the elements that drive engagement and discoverability.
Optimise for the algorithm
LinkedIn's algorithm considers content length as a quality signal. Posts in the 1,200–1,500 character sweet spot tend to receive the most engagement, while very short or extremely long posts underperform.
Mobile-first sizing
On mobile, character limits feel even tighter because less text is visible per screen. Knowing your exact count helps you structure content that reads well on the devices most of your audience uses.
Cross-format planning
Different LinkedIn content types have different limits. A character counter lets you plan and repurpose content across posts (3,000), comments (1,250), headlines (220), and invitations (300).
LinkedIn Character Limits Guide
LinkedIn posts have a 3,000-character limit. The optimal range is 1,200–1,500 characters for maximum engagement. Only the first 125–200 characters are visible before the 'see more' link.
Comment character limit is 1,250. Thoughtful, longer comments (100–300 characters) perform better than short reactions. They also boost your visibility in the comment section.
Headlines: 220 Characters
Profile headlines max out at 220 characters, but only 75 show on mobile. Front-load your most important keywords and value proposition within the first 75 characters.
About: 2,600 Characters
The About section allows 2,600 characters. The optimal range is 1,200–2,400 characters. The first 2–3 lines are visible in the preview, so start strong.
Connection Notes: 300 Characters
Connection request notes are limited to 300 characters. This is extremely tight — personalise with the recipient's name, a shared connection point, and a clear reason for connecting.
Articles: 125,000 Characters
LinkedIn articles allow up to 125,000 characters (~20,000 words). However, articles between 1,000–1,600 words (6,000–10,000 characters) perform best for engagement and read-through rates.
